Nol Card Upgrade 2026: Account-Based Ticketing Explained

Dubai’s Nol card is getting its biggest overhaul since the metro launched in 2009. The RTA is spending AED 550 million to rebuild the Nol payment system from card-based ticketing to account-based ticketing (ABT) — a shift that will let you pay with QR codes, bank cards and phone wallets, not just plastic. The project was 72% complete in July 2026, with full rollout targeted for end of Q1 2027.

Here’s what the upgrade actually means, what’s coming, when — and just as importantly, what is not changing.

What “Account-Based Ticketing” Actually Means

Today, your money lives on the card. Account-based ticketing flips this: the balance lives in RTA’s system, and the card becomes just an identifier. The gate looks up your account instead of rewriting a chip. Credit bought on your phone becomes usable immediately, a lost card no longer takes your balance with it, and the thing you tap can be a card, a phone, a watch or a bank card.

Timeline: How We Got to 72%

  • March 2025 — RTA announces the AED 550 million upgrade; project 40% complete. Target: Q3 2026.
  • 5 July 2026 — 72% completion announced; finish line moves to end of Q1 2027.
  • Early 2027 — full rollout of QR ticketing, bank-card payments and digital wallets.

The Three Phases

  1. Phase 1 — Digital accounts + QR ticketing. Central system upgraded; QR-code ticketing launches through digital channels.
  2. Phase 2 — New-generation Nol cards. New cards aligned with international banking standards.
  3. Phase 3 — Bank cards & wallets. Fare payment with bank cards and digital wallets across public transport.

Phase 3: tap your bank card at the gate — no transit card needed.

What Is NOT Changing

  • Fares stay the same — zone pricing (AED 3/5/7.50 Silver) untouched.
  • Your current card keeps working — no cut-off date announced.
  • The 10-digit Tag ID stays — our balance check guide still applies.
  • Minimum balance rules stand — AED 7.50 at gates (AED 3.50 Blue).
  • Top-up channels keep working — see how to recharge.

What Should You Do Now?

  1. Keep your card. Nothing needs replacing.
  2. Register/personalise it (AED 30, Emirates ID) — see our refund & lost-card guide.
  3. Watch RTA announcements for the account-creation launch.
  4. Don’t buy tech on rumours. Assume Apple Wallet support isn’t coming until RTA confirms.
  5. Photograph your Tag ID today. It remains your key identifier through the transition.

What It Means for Tourists vs Residents

Tourists (2026–2027): almost nothing changes — keep buying the Silver card for your visit as usual.

Residents: the upgrade rewards registered users most — family management, auto top-ups, daily statements.
