Nol Card Minimum Balance: How Much You Need to Travel in 2026

You’re rushing to the Metro, you tap your Nol card — and the gate stays shut. Nine times out of ten, the reason is the minimum balance rule: Dubai’s RTA requires a minimum amount on your card before it lets you tap in.

Here’s the short answer: AED 7.50 on a Silver, Gold, or Travel card — and only AED 3.50 on a Blue Personal card.

Minimum Balance by Card Type (2026)

Card Minimum balance to tap in
Silver AED 7.50
Gold AED 7.50
NOL Travel card AED 7.50
Blue (Personal) AED 3.50
Red Ticket At least one journey loaded

Why AED 7.50? The Logic Behind the Rule

RTA checks your balance on the way in, not on the way out. Because the system can’t know how many zones you’ll cross, it asks for the highest possible single fare up front — AED 7.50. The unused portion is never taken — once you tap out, only the actual zone fare is deducted.

New card? A fresh Silver card arrives with AED 19 loaded — comfortably above the minimum.

What Happens When Your Balance Is Too Low?

At Metro/Tram gates

The gate simply refuses to open — red light, “insufficient balance”, nothing deducted. Ticket vending machines stand right next to the gates (minimum top-up AED 20).

On buses

Bus validators reject the tap the same way — and not every bus stop has a top-up machine nearby. Check your balance before heading to the bus stop.

At parking meters

Nol cards double as RTA parking payment — a sub-minimum balance means the meter won’t accept the card.

The Blue Personal Exception: Why AED 3.50?

The Blue Personal card opens gates at just AED 3.50 because it’s registered to your Emirates ID — RTA accepts a lower deposit. See our Nol card types & prices guide.

How Much Buffer Should You Keep?

  1. Daily commuters: keep AED 20–30 on the card.
  2. Airport runs: RTA advises AED 15 on Silver (AED 30 on Gold).
  3. Weekly rhythm: top up every Sunday evening, or set auto top-up in the Nol Pay app.
Don’t confuse “pending credit” with balance. Online top-ups sit as pending credit for 45 minutes to 4 hours and do not count toward the AED 7.50 until activated — tap at a Metro gate, parking meter, or ticket machine, or instantly via NFC in the Nol Pay app. Full steps in our Nol card recharge guide.

Stuck Below the Minimum? Fix It in 2 Minutes

  1. At a station: vending machine (min AED 20, instant) or ticket office (min AED 50).
  2. With your phone: Nol Pay app NFC top-up — instant, no activation wait.
  3. Online: rta.ae (min AED 5), then activate at any gate before travelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum balance for a Nol card?

AED 7.50 on Silver, Gold, and Travel cards; AED 3.50 on the Blue Personal card. Below the threshold, gates and bus validators refuse your tap.

Why do I need AED 7.50 when my trip only costs AED 3?

RTA checks your balance at tap-in and requires the highest possible single fare (AED 7.50) as a deposit. You’re only charged the actual zone fare at tap-out.

What happens if my Nol card balance is too low?

The gate/reader refuses the tap — red light, nothing deducted. Top up at a vending machine (min AED 20), ticket office (min AED 50), or via Nol Pay NFC.

Why does a Blue Personal card only need AED 3.50?

It’s registered to your Emirates ID, so RTA accepts a lower deposit — plus balance protection and concession fares.

Does pending credit count toward the minimum balance?

No. Online top-ups are “pending credit” for 45 min–4 h and don’t count until activated at a gate, meter, machine, or via Nol Pay NFC. Expires after 180 days unactivated.

How much balance should I keep on my Nol card?

AED 20–30 buffer for commuting; AED 15 on Silver for airport round trips. Or enable auto top-up in the Nol Pay app.

Can I travel if my balance drops below AED 7.50 mid-journey?

Yes — the check happens at tap-in. You can always tap out; you just can’t start a new journey until you top up.

Will RTA warn me before my balance runs low?

Yes, for personalised cards — SMS/email alerts when a Blue card drops below AED 7.50. Nol Pay app also has low-balance notifications.

Is there a minimum balance for the Red Ticket?

No monetary minimum — but it must have at least one journey loaded to tap in.

How do I check my Nol card balance quickly?

Fastest: Nol Pay app NFC. Also: RTA website with 10-digit Tag ID, station vending machines, or SMS to 511. See our balance check guide.
