Route 2020: The Branch Explained

Route 2020 is the AED 11 billion, 15-km, 7-station extension that opened in June 2021 to link central Dubai with the Expo 2020 site. From Jabal Ali (R38), the branch runs:

The Gardens (R70) → Discovery Gardens (R71) → Al Furjan (R72) → Jumeirah Golf Estates (R73) → Dubai Investment Park (R74) → Expo 2020 (R76)

Check the destination board. At Jabal Ali, Red Line trains split: some run the Route 2020 branch to Expo 2020, others take the main branch to Life Pharmacy. Board the wrong one and you’ll backtrack from Jabal Ali.

  • Dubai South: the station also serves the growing Dubai South residential and logistics districts — check RTA bus links for last-mile connections.
  • Future extension: long-term plans envisage extending the line south toward Al Maktoum International Airport — for now, check RTA bus connections for DWC.

Station History

Expo 2020 station opened on 1 June 2021 as the flagship of Route 2020 — the AED 11 billion, 7-station Red Line extension built to serve Expo 2020 Dubai. Its wing-inspired architecture and 29,000-passenger-per-hour capacity were designed for world-expo crowds. After the expo closed, the station was repurposed for the permanent Expo City Dubai district — a rare case of mega-event infrastructure transitioning smoothly into everyday public transport.

A Perfect Half-Day From Expo 2020

Morning: arrive for Expo City Dubai opening — walk Exit 1 to Al Wasl Plaza, then explore the legacy pavilions and the Expo Water Feature. Midday: lunch in the district’s restaurants. Afternoon: check what’s on at the Dubai Exhibition Centre (Exit 2) — concerts and exhibitions run year-round. Tip: on event days, arrive early and check the last train home before you go in — special services are common but not guaranteed.

Good to Know: Riding From This Station

  • Tap in and out — every journey needs both taps, or you’ll be charged the maximum fare.
  • No eating or drinking on trains and in stations — this rule is strictly enforced.
  • Let passengers alight first before boarding; stand clear of the doors.
  • Women & children cabin: the pink-marked cabin is reserved — men entering can be fined AED 100.
  • Gold Class: the premium cabin (roughly double the fare) is at the front in the direction of travel.
  • Luggage: one large suitcase + one small bag per passenger; use the lifts.
  • Friday nights run late (until 1:00 AM); Sunday mornings start late (8:00 AM).

Where to Stay & Eat Nearby

Expo City Dubai has its own restaurants and cafés around Al Wasl Plaza and the parks — the district is designed for full-day visits. Hotels are growing across Dubai South, mostly mid-range properties serving the exhibition centre and the airport corridor. For event days, eat before the evening rush — queues build fast after headline shows.
