The Name: From Palm Deira to Gold Souq

The station opened in 2011 as Palm Deira, named after the (later cancelled) Palm Deira megaproject offshore. In May 2020 RTA renamed it Gold Souq to reflect what travellers actually come here for — the world-famous gold market a few minutes’ walk away. Older maps and some third-party apps may still show “Palm Deira”; it is the same station. (More renames: why Dubai Metro stations change names.)

Which Exit? The Exit Guide

Gold Souq metro station exit guide — Exit 1 to Gold Souq, Exit 3 to Spice Souq and abra station
Exit 1 for gold, Exit 3 for spices and the AED 1 abra.

Picking the right exit saves you 10–15 minutes of walking in Deira’s maze of streets:

Exit Leads to Walk time
Exit 1 Gold Souq main entrance & Gold Centre building ~5 min
Exit 3 Spice Souq & Dubai Creek abra station ~7 min
Tourist shortcut: many visitors find Al Ras (G23) — one stop toward Creek — marginally closer to the Gold Souk’s main gate (about a 5-minute walk from its Exit 2). Either station works; Gold Souq (G22) is better if you also want the bus station or One Deira Mall.

Gold Shopping Tips

  • Check the daily rate: Dubai’s gold price is published daily — know the per-gram rate before you enter a shop.
  • Haggle on making charges, not the gold price itself — the metal price is fixed; the craftsmanship fee is negotiable.
  • Cash helps: card payments sometimes add a surcharge; cash often unlocks a better making-charge deal.
  • Keep receipts: reputable shops issue proper invoices — essential for resale or customs.
  • Go early: arrive at souk opening (10 AM) to browse before the tour-bus crowds.
  • Mind metro rules: no eating or drinking on the train (AED 100 fine) — save the karak for the souk cafés. See metro rules & fines.
