What Time Is Jummah in Abu Dhabi?

12:45 PM — every Friday, in every mosque across the UAE. The unified timing was introduced in January 2026 so that the sermon and prayer happen simultaneously nationwide. Unlike the five daily prayers, Jummah does not shift with the seasons: it is 12:45 PM in June and 12:45 PM in December.

How Jummah Works

  1. Arrive early — ideally well before 12:45 PM; the earlier you come, the greater the reward
  2. Pray 2 Sunnah rakats (greeting the mosque) when you enter, then sit quietly
  3. Listen to the khutbah — the sermon, delivered in two parts; talking or phone use during it invalidates the reward
  4. Pray 2 Fard rakats in congregation behind the imam, recited aloud
  5. Pray 2–4 Sunnah rakats afterwards (2 at home or 4 in the mosque, per common practice)

Where to Pray Jummah in Abu Dhabi

  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — the iconic choice, but arrive very early; it draws huge Friday crowds. Visitor tours pause around prayer times. See our Grand Mosque prayer guide.
  • Your neighborhood mosque — the practical choice; every community mosque holds Jummah at 12:45 PM
  • Workplace mosques — many offices and malls host Friday congregations

Jummah Etiquette

  • Ghusl (full bath) on Friday morning is the Sunnah practice
  • Wear your best clean clothes and apply perfume
  • Do not step over people to reach the front rows — take the nearest available spot
  • Stay silent during the khutbah; even telling someone else to be quiet breaks it
  • Switch your phone fully off, not just silent
  • Women may attend the congregation (in the designated area) or pray the regular Dhuhr at home

What If You Miss Jummah?

If you arrive after the imam has finished — or cannot attend at all — pray the regular 4-rakat Dhuhr instead. Jummah cannot be made up as Jummah.

Why 12:45 PM? The Story of the Unified Time

The 12:45 PM time is brand new. In December 2025, AWQAF — the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat — announced that from Friday, January 2, 2026, the khutbah and Jummah prayer would begin at 12:45 PM in every mosque nationwide.

Before that, Friday times varied by emirate: Dubai and Abu Dhabi generally prayed around 1:30 PM (under a 1:15 PM standard in place since 2022), while Sharjah and some northern emirates prayed closer to 12:30 PM. The unification’s stated aims: consistency of worship, better organization and crowd management, and smoother family routines — the change coincides with 2026 being the UAE’s “Year of the Family.” Imams advise arriving 15–30 minutes early so you can pray voluntary rakats and settle calmly before the khutbah begins.

Who Must Attend — and Who Is Excused

Jummah is an obligation, but not on everyone. Tariq ibn Shihab narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Jumuah is an obligatory duty for every Muslim in congregation, except four: a slave, a woman, a child, or one who is sick” (Abu Dawud; graded sahih). Travelers are likewise exempt.

What the exempt do instead: they pray the regular 4-rakat Dhuhr. Jummah replaces Dhuhr for attendees; for everyone else, Dhuhr stands as normal. Scholars also recognize practical excuses for missing a given Friday — such as essential workers (emergency medical staff, security) who cannot leave their post — and they too pray Dhuhr.

Friday Sunnahs: Ghusl, Al-Kahf, and Salawat

Friday has its own set of emphasized Sunnahs beyond the prayer itself:

  • Ghusl — “Anyone of you coming for the Jumuah prayer should take a bath” (Bukhari). Friday morning starts with full ritual washing.
  • Surah Al-Kahf — “Whoever reads Surat al-Kahf on Friday will be illuminated with light between the two Fridays” (Hakim; graded sahih). The window runs from Thursday sunset to Friday sunset.
  • Abundant salawat — “The best of your days is Friday… so send a great deal of blessings upon me, for your blessings will be shown to me” (Abu Dawud).
  • Early arrival — the earlier you reach the mosque, the greater the reward; and once the khutbah starts, silence is obligatory.

The Hour of Acceptance

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) spoke of Friday and said: “On this day there is a time when no Muslim stands and prays, asking Allah for something, but Allah will grant it” — gesturing with his hand to show how short it is (Bukhari, Muslim).

Scholars differ on exactly when this hour falls: some say it is the last hour after Asr, others that it is during the khutbah itself, between the imam’s sitting and the end of the prayer. The practical advice from scholars: strive in dua throughout the whole of Friday — especially the late afternoon — in hope of catching it.

Jummah and Work: Your Rights in the UAE

Friday prayer and the workweek intersect for every employed Muslim in the UAE. The legal picture:

  • UAE Labour Law obligates private-sector employers to give Muslim employees an appropriate break to attend Jummah — it is a right, not a favor
  • In practice, private companies handle it differently: extended lunch breaks, flexible hours, or work-from-home Fridays — arrangements vary by employer
  • The public sector runs a Friday half-day, built around the prayer

If your role genuinely cannot be left unattended at 12:45 PM — emergency services, hospital cover, critical security — scholars count that as a valid excuse: pray Dhuhr, and coordinate cover so you can attend when possible.
